Tar Baby 02:45
Let’s make a baby out of blacktop tar Horse hair and chicken bones and cooking lard The sweetest little thing that you ever saw Okay. Let’s make a baby out of Jujubes Toothpaste and tallow wax and axle grease It’s only you and me now, and baby makes three Okay. Acey, deucey, one-eyed jacks There ain’t no jokers in this pack We’re going away and we ain’t coming back Okay. Let’s make a baby out of blacktop tar Asphalt and gravel, oakum, mud and straw We’ll put him in pajamas and we’ll get in the car Okay. There ain’t no time for slow dancing Or making love all day Ain’t never gonna give ’em no chance To take our baby away Okay? Okay. Let’s take baby for a ride downtown We’ll take him to the Jupiter and show him around He won’t make a mess and he won’t make a sound Okay. Acey, deucey, one-eyed jacks There ain’t no jokers in this pack We’re going away and we ain’t coming back Okay. Acey, deucey, one-eyed jacks There ain’t no jokers in this pack We’re going away and we ain’t coming back Okay, Okay, Okay, Okay!

I saw you last night, and the night before I thought my poor heart couldn’t take any more But here I come as cool as I can be Well I might as well be on my hands and knees I seen you standing out on Hudson Street Any fool can see you’re packing a piece You blow those kisses like it ain’t no thing You might as well blow me to smithereens Oh Annie get your gun And blow my loving heart to Kingdom Come Lay me down and set me free Send me to heaven on my hands and knees Oh Annie, get your gun You’re at your window, I can see the light I see the pillow where you bed down at night You look into my eyes like I’m the one You might be looking out at anyone Annie get your gun And blow my loving heart to Kingdom Come Lay me down and set me free Oh, put an end to all my misery Oh Annie, get your gun I hear you laughing, when I try to sleep And I seen you crying when I’m out on my beat I know the keyhole at your back door But I don’t know what the hell you’re waiting for Annie get your gun And blow my loving heart to Kingdom Come Lay me down and set me free Send me to heaven on my hands and knees Oh Annie, get your gun
3.
I Been Hurt 03:39
Have I been hurt? I ain’t hurt anymore I’ve been broke But I ain’t gonna break anymore Oh and I know when my time is come Though I’ve been burned I won’t burn out on the vine How many heartaches, how many heartaches Can any man bear? Don’t send a card or a candygram, ’cause I just don’t care ’Cause I’ve been hurt But I don’t care I been stood up and knocked down And dragged ass-backwards Through heartaches by the hair I been hurt But I don’t care Sometimes it seems like, sometimes it seems like I could go anywhere I take a beating, I take a bow, well – I just don’t care ’Cause I’ve been hurt But I don’t care I been pie-eyed and pointed at, And laughed at and locked out And eighty-sixed most everywhere I’ve been hurt, hurt But I don’t care Yeah I’ve been hurt Oh, but I don’t care I been beat up and black-eyed, I’ve been paid peanuts And pushed rum-tumble down the stairs I’ve been hurt, hurt But I don’t care Oh no I been hurt, hurt, hurt But I don’t care
4.
Don’t forget me when I’m gone Don’t forget me when I’m gone Lay them flowers o’er my head And when them horses come ’round the bend Blow your horns, so I can hear Blow them loud and blow them clear Two red pennies on my eyes Pay my way to paradise On my soul, I ain’t afraid And I ain’t too proud to beg Please don’t forget me when I’m gone Don’t forget me when I’m gone Don’t forget me when I’m gone Make my bed in the stony ground And come the time for to lower me down Ring them bells, so I can hear Ring ’em loud and ring ’em clear Two red pennies on my eyes Pay my way to paradise On my soul, I ain’t afraid And I ain’t too proud to beg Please don’t forget me when I’m gone Oh please don’t forget me when I’m gone Don’t forget me when I’m gone Don’t forget me when I’m gone In the summertime, when the creek runs high From time to time, as the years roll by Just call my name, so I can hear Call it loud and call it clear Two red pennies on my eyes Pay my way to paradise On my soul, I ain’t afraid And I ain’t too proud to beg Please don’t forget me when I’m gone Oh please don’t forget me when I’m gone Please don’t forget me when I’m gone
5.
Have I had true love? Without a doubt I’ve been pulled up, lord, and I’ve been knocked down You fall into love, you crawl back out And even true love travels south So when the sun goes down, and the lights come out If you should find my open arms out in the crowd There’s only one thing I will ask you from the start Don’t fuck around with my heart I’m just a fella with a one track mind Just knock me off my feet and treat me kind ’Cause crying eyes you know are not so blind And a broken heart can still keep time Just take a long look into my eyes This black and blue heart won’t tell no lies ’Cause I’ve been through love, and I found this out – It wakes you up just to knock you out I don’t need no virgin bride and I don’t need no whore I don’t need no ’nother dose of what I had before Just shine a little light to help me through the dark And don’t fuck around with my heart I’m just a fella with a one track mind Just knock me off my feet and treat me kind ’Cause crying eyes you know are not so blind And a broken heart can still keep time ’Cause crying eyes you know are not so blind And a broken heart can still keep time

My Suicide 03:15
7.
Gasworks standing on the hill Watching over everything They’re long gone now, but I can see them still I love London in the Spring I love London in the Spring I love London in the Spring Old Bow bells are nevermore to ring But I love London in the Spring Black clouds gather overhead They’re making way for other things And then the rain comes down to wash it all away I love London in the Spring ’Cause I can hear her sing to me She is everything to me And I’d do anything at all to be In London in the Spring Well, she’s seen better days, I guess But who among us couldn’t say the same? And there’s a dance or two in the old dame yet I love London in the Spring Yes, I love London in the Spring I love London in the Spring Long gone sparrows are nevermore to sing But I love London in the Spring ’Cause I can hear them anyway, say Hey we’ll get out of the woods someday And me and them are always gonna stay In London in the Spring In London in the Spring In London in the Spring ’Cause I love London in the Spring I love London in the Spring Long gone sparrows are nevermore to sing But I love London in the Spring Those long gone sparrows are nevermore to sing But I love London in the Spring

I have let so many things go wrong They kept me up all night Smiling faces I turned upon And debts I left behind Keep me moving on Keep me moving on Keep me moving on Keep me moving on There is a garden of pleasures untold Which any man may know Though you may wander down any road You only get one go And you’ve got to be so strong Just to walk on With wide open eyes, Body and soul Keep me moving on Keep me moving on Keep me moving on Keep me moving on All of the memories that I keep close Ups and downs I’ve known Some I’ve had, and some I lost Oh it’s a heavy load And you’ve got to be so strong Just to hold on And stronger yet Just to let go Keep me moving on Keep me moving on Keep me moving on Keep me moving on

Billy wakes up to the roaring fan The clinking bottles like a marching band Like wild buffaloes, the shivers run Won’t they be running when the Monday comes Rolling thunder in the midday sun His heart is beating like a kettle drum Billy stumbles like a burning man Up to the corner with his hat in hand His typewriter and his wedding band It’s not the sabbath Uncle Billy planned He’s in the game again and feeling fine He calls his buddy over one more time The one sure thing that Billy ever found He sets ’em up and Billy knocks ’em down Oh Billy sure can knock ’em down, down, down Oh, Billy sure can knock ’em down Every night they hear him sing and shout But every morning turns him inside out His brow is dripping, his mouth is dry They hear him whimper and they hear him cry His only mercy, his one true love And any fool knows what he’s thinking of He’s in the game again and feeling fine He calls his buddy over one more time The one sure thing that Billy ever found He sets ’em up and Billy knocks ’em down Oh Billy sure can knock ’em down, down, down Oh, Billy sure can knock ’em down Every Sunday you can see him there His every drink is like a dying prayer But every Monday, alive again And backsliding every nine a.m. Well I never listen, but – I’ve heard it said Poor Uncle Billy, he’d be better off dead But he’s in the game again and feeling fine He calls his buddy over one more time The one sure thing that Billy ever found He sets ’em up and Billy knocks ’em down Oh Billy sure can knock ’em down, down, down Oh, Billy sure can knock ’em down Billy sure can knock ’em down!

Fireflies 04:48
All across the face of the earth Like the little lost stars above We’re lost in a wilderness, and in wilderness we love Where the flowers have no names, the beasts are all untamed And no two things the same We’re growing wild There’s a fog on the forest floor As the sun pokes through the pines In her eyes, that look I know, I can have her any time Far away, a wild fire, there’s berries on the briars And so we pause a while We’re growing wild We’re growing wild, wild, wild Wild, wild, wild And she says Sing to me, like the wind sings through the trees The birds sing to the bees On a summer’s eve You do to me what the wind does to the trees The birds do with the bees On a summer’s eve There’s a bend in the river there Where the grass grows ten feet high Through the red, red water wade my tender love and I All around, the fireflies reflecting in her eyes They light my way a while We’re growing wild We’re growing wild, wild, wild Wild, wild, wild And I sing
11.
I love a woman and she doesn’t even care I’ve loved her every way and I’ve loved her everywhere I’ve tried to put it sweetly, I sung in a song But anyway it comes out wrong We’ve lived together now for twenty years or more And every day I pray she’ll open up the door But still she looks right through me, like I ain’t standing there And I know the lady doesn’t care I know the lady doesn’t care I know the lady doesn’t care I long to run my weary fingers through her hair But I know the lady doesn’t care There runs a river here and it’s lit up every night There was a market too, I worked there once or twice The roads arrayed around her like garlands in her hair But still the lady doesn’t care I know the lady doesn’t care I know the lady doesn’t care I might be anyone, I might be anywhere But I know the lady doesn’t care I won’t be torn apart The day the bastards break my heart I’ll ride that sick old river out to sea To where the grass is green and high The big black sun up in the sky My love is waiting there for me We used to share a drink down by the water’s edge We shared a house in town with six or seven friends But pretty soon, I fear, there won’t be anywhere But still the lady doesn’t care I know the lady doesn’t care
12.
When the Lord went into his garden There before him, what he saw – His lady Eve, all dressed in leaves And that cocky serpent was walking tall Having forbade this, when he surveyed this The Lord let forth a mighty squall And, in his rage, said – ‘Right! From now on Everybody must crawl!’ Everybody must crawl Everybody must crawl It’s a fact, Jack, for one and all Everybody must crawl! On your back you’ll ever suffer On your knees forever toil And you must sing for every supper, boys ’Cause everybody must crawl! Belshazzar he threw a party Most immodest for his lords The finest wines for his concubines And the finest silver for his whores Then all a sudden, from up above him A hand appeared upon the wall And the message that it scrawled Was ‘everybody must crawl’ Everybody must crawl Everybody must crawl It’s a fact, Jack, for one and all Everybody must crawl! You’ve been weighed up and found wanting And your kingdom is bound to fall And you must sing for your crackerjacks, oh boy! In other words – everybody must crawl! If you go down to Greenwood town Past the churchyard, and ’round the bend You just sit tight there, and ’round midnight There’ll come a man ’bout six-foot-ten And when that man then puts out his hand, then Your wish can be his one command On one condition, you can have it all You understand – everybody must crawl! Yes, everybody must crawl Everybody must crawl It’s a fact, Jack, for one and all Everybody must crawl! Yes, everybody must crawl Everybody must crawl It’s a fact, Jack, for one and all Everybody must crawl! ’Cause there’s a key for every door And there’s a door for every wall But there is one law left unbroken, boys – Everybody must crawl! There’s only one law left unbroken, boys – Everybody must crawl!

The grave grass will cover us next year The grave grass will cover us next year The grave grass will cover us next year The grave grass will cover us next year Wade into the water with me, dear Wade into the water with me, dear In flames will the summer disappear And grave grass will cover us next year Wade into the water with me, dear Wade into the water with me, dear The grave grass will cover us next year
14.
Lord, lord, lord, I’d jump right into the river and drown If I thought I’d see her smiling at me Doo doo, etc. Lord, lord, lord, I’d jump right into the river and drown If I thought I’d see her smiling at me Doo doo, etc. And if I thought by playing possum I might make her come up closer She might even roll me over And look into my eyes Yes, if I thought by playing possum I might make her come up closer If she’d only roll me over I could hold my breath until I heard the saints go – Until the saints go, until the saints go Doo doo, etc. Lord, lord, lord, I’d lay right down in the middle of the road If I thought I’d hear her laugh in my ear Doo doo, etc. Lord, lord, lord, I’d lay right down in the middle of the road If I thought I’d hear her laughter in my ear Doo doo, etc. And if I thought by playing possum I might make her come up closer She might even roll me over And look into my eyes Yes, if I thought by playing possum I might make her come up closer If she’d only roll me over I could hold my breath until I heard the saints go Doo doo, etc. Until the saints go, until the saints go Doo doo, etc. Until the saints go, oh, until the saints go, oh! Until the saints go, until the saints go Until the saints go, until the saints go Until the saints go, until the saints go I could hold my breath until I heard the saints go Doo doo, etc.
15.
Handsome Sam, the ladies’ man Lives alone in a caravan Standing over the frying pan, he says ‘Sam, you’ve done the best you can But damn the day and that fat old sun Rushing away when the day is done My skin isn’t thin and my bones aren’t sore But every day goes quicker than the day before’ And then dang-a-lang-a-lang go the big brass bells Six o’clock and all is well Where the time goes, who can tell? But my good looks are going straight to hell In the limelight, burning bright Archie stands most every night And of a salty Saturday He pours it on for the matinee He treads the boards to the dressing room door Chucks poor Yorick over his shoulder The wig on the hatstand, the frock on the floor And he says ‘Dear God, I’ve got so much more to give’ But then dang-a-lang-a-lang go the big brass bells Six o’clock and all is well Where the time goes, who can tell? But my good looks are going straight to hell Ten long years since he took a taste And Chester’s face is laid to waste He can sing and he used to play Till he lost his chops in an alleyway You can find him at the Grand Hotel Doubled over on his wishing well He gets up again and he wipes his chin He stands there looking where his bright eyes once had been And then dang-a-lang-a-lang go the big brass bells Six o’clock and all is well Where the time goes, who can tell? But my good looks are going straight to hell My good looks are going straight to hell, oh My good looks are going straight to hell
16.
I’ve been high, as high as any fool could be And I’ve seen lows that no fool should see And I’ve rushed in where a fool wouldn’t go Wearied of pleasures they will never know And I’m not sorry now for a motherfucking thing Now, I’ve been lost so long in a bottomless dream Satisfied? – there ain’t no such thing And I don’t care what my friends all say I’ll be up on my feet one day And I’m not sorry now for a motherfucking thing Now, in this dream there is nowhere you can’t go See cloud nine, see skid row You may be burdened by the mess you’ve made You may be worried ’bout the Judgement Day But I’m not sorry now for a motherfucking thing, oh no Oh and don’t I know it isn’t good for me? Oh, and can’t I see I oughta let it be? Well, don’t I know? Yes, they told me so And can’t I see? Well, yes – any fool but me But they don’t know How sweet it can be
17.
I’m the one she turns to tell it to when she ain’t treated right Every time she turns away, you know it tears me up inside It’s an endless parade, a pageant, of posers, pricks and fools What it is, I can’t imagine, a poor boy has to do All the girls that walk the world could make a ring around the sun But when I make her laugh it’s like there might as well be only one And every swine in the whole wide world has had a root around her pearls Here am I standing right beside her, like the last man in the world But if I reach out just to touch her If I hold her close and clutch her In my arms, as I have never done before And if I look into her eyes If I tell her in my silence What I wouldn’t tell a million times or more And if I kiss her, will she kiss me back, oh Lord If I kiss her, will she kiss me back? If I kiss her, will she kiss me back, oh Lord If I kiss her, will she kiss me back? She’s the only one I’m thinking of when I’m with other girls If she knew the way I think of her, I’d lose her love for sure The world turns like a top that teeters in the darkness all around You put a kiss on the wrong two lips, you turn the whole thing upside down She’s the one She’s the one She’s the one She’s the one She’s the one She’s the one She’s the one She’s the one But if I reach out just to touch her If I hold her close and clutch her In my arms, as I have never done before And if I look into her eyes If I tell her in my silence What I wouldn’t tell, a million times or more, oh no And if I kiss her, will she kiss me back, oh Lord? If I kiss her, will she kiss me back?

Easy Jean 03:22
Easy Jean, the sex machine In Sergios and Maybelline And in her heart she knows no fear How can she lose when she’s so sincere? Oh, Easy Jean Easy Jean, so serene A cherry coke and a magazine Feral and free now is Easy Jean God only knows now the things she’s seen Oh, oh, Easy Jean She doesn’t see me, but – she’s not to blame ’Cause Easy Jean has no time for games But in our hearts we’re just the same One day my Jeanie – she’ll know my name Oh, oh, Easy Jean I think of Jeanie, so pure of heart When days grow long, long, long, and nights are dark And in our hearts we know no fear How can we lose when we’re so sincere? Oh, oh, Easy Jean
19.
Blue Nova 03:31
What’s the opposite of a warm embrace? They don’t ever say your name, or look you in the face But leave you out to dangle in a swirl of disgrace And bad blood and bitter regret Like a blue nova, all around your head They say a chilly wind is blowing down now And the coldest frost in 40 years gonna cover up the ground The sun is sinking sideways, and low across the town There’s a black dog that won’t leave my side And a blue nova all around my head You gotta get up and set yourself free When everywhere you look you see A blue nova rollin’ round your head I’m getting pretty tired of painting the town Goin’ out watering my sorrows with all the new friends I’ve found I let the house fall in like I had someone else to be But I had to start over again With a blue nova all around my head All this time I spent Back in my old skin There’s been a blue nova rollin’ round my head It’s a blue nova Rollin’ round my head
20.
Swan Song 04:32
Ginny went up to the city Hanging around with a friend Ginny went up to the city She never came home again And Ginny would rather be anywhere else but here, oh Ginny would rather be anywhere else but here And everyone’s tearing their feathers out over Ginny But they won’t be tearing her feathers out any more, oh no She said – ‘Show me where it says I gotta hang around this pond I ain’t a fucking duckling, I’m a swan, I’m a swan Show me where it says I gotta hang around this pond I ain’t a fucking duckling, I’m a swan, I’m a swan, I’m a swan – oh oh, I’m a swan Oh oh, I’m a swan’ Ooh la, ooh la, etc. Take a ride out to the water Sit in the car and get high Out in the street with a dollar There isn’t a thrill you can buy Everyone misses you, Ginny I totaled the old Cavalier It’s Saturday night again, Ginny You’ve got to get me out of here ’Cause Ginny I’d rather be anywhere else but here Oh, Ginny I’d rather be anywhere else but here And everyone’s tearing my feathers out down here, Ginny But they won’t be tearing my feathers out any more, oh no Oh, show me where it says I gotta hang around this pond I ain’t a fucking duckling, I’m a swan, I’m a swan Show me where it says I gotta hang around this pond I ain’t a fucking duckling, I’m a swan, I’m a swan I’m a swan – oh oh, I’m a swan Oh oh, I’m a swan Ooh la, ooh la, etc. Poor Tom went to the city Hanging around with a friend Poor Tom went to the city He never came home again He said ‘Ginny I’d rather be anywhere else but here Oh, Ginny I’d rather be anywhere else but here’ Ooh la, ooh la, etc.
21.
It’s been fun, so fun Now the day is all but done It’s been fun What a gas, now it’s past Smiling eyes on everyone It’s been fun I might’ve thought it’d last forever Our once upon a time a tavern days Had just begun, and now they’re done It’s been fun, so fun Ride into the setting sun It’s been fun One day we’ll maybe raise a glass again We’ll sing a serenade to absent friends For good things all Are yet to come It’s been fun, so fun Ride into the setting sun It’s been fun Ride into the setting sun It’s been fun

about

Danger Island is the debut solo album from singer-songwriter MOLE. It has been five years in the making, and is finally due for release on 17 August 2018.

The album includes a stack of new songs – ballads, boogaloos, torch songs, tone poems – as well as a handful of older songs that never got a fair shake in the studio. Replete with rich, intricate string and brass arrangements, tuned percussion, and an array of beautifully understated guest performances, Danger Island is a kaleidoscopic jumble of experiments, fantasies and miniature symphonies.

A lot of brilliant people contributed to Danger Island, including just about everyone from MOLE’s previous bands, Marseille Figs and The Jupiter Band. Its roster of guests includes people from Field Music, Pumarosa, The Rails, The Pretenders, Cinematic Orchestra, Gallon Drunk, Down I Go, The Pogues, Rum Buffalo, Fine Print, Small Hours and Kidnap Alice. It also features extensive contributions from pianist Louis Vause (Madness, Graham Coxon) and double bass legend John Edwards.

Danger Island is being released in a deluxe double LP edition, in a lovely gatefold sleeve with lyrics booklet and download card included, as well as a single-CD edition in a six-panel digifile.
